yikes, I just checked how the Mets did while I was on that trip… it seems their big run started just after I got home. I don't know why I remember them winning. Maybe I was just happy to see baseball scores, and these years later those happy memories translated into “Mets must have won.”
For the record though, the Mets played their worst when I was in France. Figures.

I remember a 2 week trip to Europe in 2001, wasting an hour each day in various hotel rooms in various countries watching BBC World Sports, waiting for the 15 seconds in which they flashed MLB scores (this was still before hotels had computer lounges, I guess). It's a fond memory because it was August, so the Mets had started to make their late-season push. The news was usually good.
When I arrived back in JFK, I believe the Mets had just started playing so I was heavily anticipating hearing FAN in the car, but before I could do that my ears received a welcome surprise. While we waited for our luggage, one security guard said to another, “did you see the Mariners killed the Yankees today?”
It was great to be home.

(If that was it, there's way better reasons to have picked Yale than the Mets! :) And at least in MA the ESPN games don't get blacked out….)
