oh, (jeez, gotta get all my thoughts together!) the Ads in old ballparks used to look classy and blend in with the atmosphere (Abe Starks' "hit sign, win suit", Gem Razor) but now take so much away and lead to cynicism. Sad. Happy Holidays!!!

After reading this amazing entry (something I need to start doing more often, i must admit, this is only my third time reading on the site) the first thing that popped into my head at the end was this: you took the two to sterling?! I moved to Eastern Parkway and Rogers Ave about a year ago, and was very anxious to find out how close to Ebbets I was. I knew it must be nearby, i'm right down the street from the park. I was working on a project about dem bums (still am) and very much wanted to go on a spiritual journey, and amazingly, I was one block over and 4 or 5 blocks up the Bedford Avenue hill from the spot, and a wide range of emotions ride through you when you see this gigantic insult to history (like the fact that the only plaque that says "baseball was here" is hidden behind a bush.) Anyway, he should have taken the 2 train to Franklin Ave or the Q to Prospect Park. From the Q, the buildings are clearly there, and from the Eastern Parkway Bedford Hilltop, you see the buildings right down the street. I understand for effect getting off at sterling, but there were easier ways for people coming from all over the city to get to the ballpark. Anyway, great work, i will keep reading, lots of thoughts went through my head while reading that entry, and I must read it again to bring all my opinions into light.

There weren't ten people waiting to get in. As for the wrong turn, I'll confess: I stole a glance.

everybody loves to rip citifield/mets security, but the real reason they would not let people in until 1:30 is what was written in the artcle, "i took a wrong turn and was walking the opposite direction of where i needed to be." for every one that truely does need to use the restroom, there are ten who will be in the outfield foodcourt walking around "exploring". citifield/mets security could use some polishing, but compared to the other ny baseball team's security, they are not all that bad.

Great post. I remember a friend driving me past Citizens Bank Park back in 2004 (just after it opened) and thinking, "Wow, this would've been really cool in the middle of Philly, but it just looks incredibly dumb in the middle of the parking lot." And then the Mets go ahead and make the same mistake. You can put retro stadiums in Camden Yards or China Basin, but not in the old Shea lot. Oh well... here's to warming up to the experience...
