Maybe it's that my ancestry is half Irish Catholic and half Jewish, so pain and suffering is something I'm attuned to, but to me it's part of the full range of the emotions of fandom that also includes the indescribable euphoria of those rare moments when we've reached the Promised Land. The HR's by Pendleton off McDowell, by Scoscia off Gooden, by Molina off Heilman, the last game at Shea, Gl@vine's final start as a Met, the Midnight Massacre...OK, no one died, but within the sports context, boy, that's suffering. It's what separates us from the knuckle-draggers who go to games in the Bronx and cast no reflection in mirrors. I’ve always figured that suffering is just part of what we signed up for as Mets fans.
