Always liked the name because of the connection to the one Metsie with the dulcet tones of his native Oklahoma. I still can’t wrap around Mets radio as I did when Murph was doing the happy recaps.

The wonders of the Internet allowed me to thoroughly plan a baseball junkie’s trip of four games (two Majors, two minors) and one wedding in a seven day span in southern California, July 2003. A derailment on the NJ rails caused me to miss my flight out of Newark, and long story short, I got to Qualcomm in the 4th inning of a Thursday matinee Diamondbacks-Padres game. As an autograph hunter, I had hoped to get some (including from onetime Met hero Jesse Orosco, by then a LOOGY for SD) but my late arrival way past batting practice killed my chances for that. It’s the only MLB park I’ve seen where the protective screen behind HP (the one with the famous black, square hole ;-) stretched all the way to the far end of the dugouts. Great protection for fans young and old, but anathema to ‘graph hunters. Anyway, Greg, I too found it ‘pleasant’. Now, if only my last single cousin in SoCal can get married so I can get out to see Petco and Angels Stadium!

Horrid toddler access notwithstanding (and I speak as one who once brought a six-month old baby to the second-to-last row of Skydome nosebleed territory), the Murph will always be dear to me simply for being the Murph. Jack was our Bob’s brother, and was as instrumental in San Diego getting NL baseball as ours was in making it tolerable for more than 40 years. Call it Qualcomm, call it obsolete, someday, no doubt, call it rubble; that connection alone will always make me call it someplace memorable.

I didn’t love Jack Murphy Stadium. In part, because when we were there in 1992, we were with our 2-year-old daughter. We bought field level seats, which wound up being a mistake, because the entrance was on the mezzanine level. So we had to go down these cinderblock stairwells to get down to the field level, then up stairs to the field level, then down stairs to get to our seats. And every time our daughter wanted something, we had to go up and down and up all of those stairs again.

It didn’t do much to endear us to the place….
