The Only Way to Fly

Eight years ago today, Faith and Fear in Flushing took flight. We’re still aloft. The Mets were taking off for the sky on February 16, 2005. These days they’re learning to crawl.

Time’s flight has been steadier than that of the Mets’ ascent, which stopped cold on a called strike three that I couldn’t have fathomed [...]

Seven Years, Eight Wishes

Seven years ago today, the blog for Mets fans who like to read was born. Thanks to all who have read along with Faith and Fear in Flushing since its founding on February 16, 2005, no matter what condition the Mets’ condition’s been in at any given juncture between then and now.

To mark the occasion, [...]

Batting a Thousand

From the Department of Milestones You Didn’t Realize Existed: tonight — barring calamity (or rain) — will be the 1,000th consecutive Mets game recapped by Faith and Fear in Flushing.

I don’t know that you can call them recaps in the traditional sense. That’s why somewhere amid our text we link you to the ESPN.com Mets [...]

Happy Izzyversary to Us

Today is the sixth anniversary of Faith and Fear in Flushing, and I’m touched that the Mets thought to get us Jason Isringhausen to mark the occasion. A 1995 Met is the perfect touch.

From the standpoint of FAFIF mythology, only Bill Pulsipher would have been more appropriate. Your co-bloggers’ first game together was June 17, [...]

Five For FAFIF

Happy birthday to us!
Happy birthday to us!
Happy birthday dear FAFIF!
Happy birthday to us!

How old are we now? February 16, 2005 is our blue and orange-letter day, having begun this thing of ours precisely a half-decade ago today. Thus, as we blow out the candles, I’d like to share five reflections on five years of blogging [...]

Escaping, Exploring & Blogging

Many were the days in a previous life when I’d seek escape from a job whose novelty had long worn off with a visit to Forgotten New York, a site that took me on virtual tours of the shadows cast throughout the Five Boroughs by a stubborn past. Why were street signs that were no [...]

Touring the New Digs

No, not Citi Field. That’s so last decade.

We seem to be fairly well settled in to our new Web home (many thanks to John Keegan for his help and for answering a million questions), so I thought I’d offer a quick tour of the new stuff and talk a bit about where we’re going. The [...]

The Hopefully Not Very Big Move

If all goes as planned, sometime next week we will be reborn on the WordPress platform.

This should mean very little is different. Those finding us through faithandfearinflushing.com should continue to do so. Ditto for those using our blogharbor address. All our posts are being moved over. At least at first, the design will look very [...]

The Community for Mets Fans Who Like to Read

We’re a team. We win together, we lose together, we celebrate and we mourn together. And defeats are softened and victories sweetened because we did them together.
—Toby Ziegler

It was fairly early in the life of this enterprise, which turns four years old today, that I coined the phrase that passes for its mission statement: the [...]

Be Amazed at the Friends You Have Here on Your Trip

In a way, this starts with Willie Randolph as long as he’s still managing our team. Willie Randolph commenced on the New York Mets adventure of a lifetime in the middle of February three years ago, as did Jason and I.

Watching Randolph’s Welcome Back press conference Friday, I felt an unusual kinship with Willie. Skip [...]
