    God bless you for this.
    No seriously.
Now I shan't live in fear of posting my top 200 list on my blog!
    Great year, FAFIF… here's to a fantabulous 2007!

  • Anonymous

Strawberry Letter 23 comes in at #412? I'm sorry, but this is pure, utter bullshit. I suggest that in this 44th year you take another listen and reconsider.

Did you know that the Mets are undefeated on your birthday???
A wonderful list–whenever American Pie is played on XM's 70's channel, I have to listen to it. Barenaked Ladies, Manilow (I admire your guts, sir!), Spinners, and unlike critics, you didn't throw anything on there to show how cool you are… you should program a radio station.
    Happy Birthday, Greg.

It would have saved me all kinds of work if you had posted this before the quiz I won.
I could complain about your #2 choice out of late-arriving prejudice against 70s music, but I won't, for the following reasons:
    (1) You've surrounded it by two damn good choices (anyone who puts the Dels at #3 is all right)
    (2) It's your damn list, after all
    (3) I, um, owned that 45. I might even still have it.
    (4) Only on account of the above, I know that the B-side of that Paper Lace single was their version of the equally hideous summer-of-74 song “Billy Don't Be a Hero,” which you were good enough not to include.

I first heard this list in 10- and 15-second snippets as part of a Top 500 montage, forcing me every 20 or 30 seconds to stop what I was doing and say “WTF?!?”
I love this list! It's so insulated from “they” wanted you to like.

In my countdown of favorite blog partners, you hold all 500 spots. (Awww.)
    Happy birthday, pal.

    Jeez.
Get a chat room you two.
    Ick.

Great list, Greg! I bet I have 200 of these on my iPod, if not more. But I must say that “Rock n Roll All Nite” is a glaring omission.
    Have a wonderful birthday!

  • Anonymous

More glaring than “Knowing Me, Knowing You” by the Swedish supergroup ABBA?

Come On Eileen wouldn't be your #4 if your Mom's name was Eileen.

    Hi Greg,
Glad to see American Pie listed as number one, but it's a good thing it was released during the winter of 71/72 – a few months earlier and it would not have qualified for your top 500!
Know each of us has his or her own personal preference so here are some recordings from those early years that I'm sorry were not included:
    At 17 – Janis Ian
I Write The Songs – Barry Manilow
If You Could Read My Mind – Gordon Lightfoot
Killing Me Softly With His Song – Roberta Flack
Laughter In The Rain – Neil Sedaka
New York, New York – Frank Sinatra/Liza Minelli
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down – Joan Baez
Ninety Nine Miles From L.A. – Johnny Mathis
Please Come To Boston – Dave Loggins
    Piano Man – Billy Joel
Starry, Starry Night (Vincent) – Don McLean

Five smash hits from the Swedish supergroup ABBA not enough?
A man after my own heart.

Deacon Blues was from 76', not 78'.

  • Anonymous

Deacon Blues debuted on Billboard's Top 100 on April 1, 1978. Years used reflect when the song was in widest release (Aja, the album, indeed came out in '77).

  • Anonymous

You mean this list isn't cool?
    Damn.

  • Anonymous

I can't decide whether you're telling me it's too high, too low or are yanking my chain.
Any which way, thanks for caring that much.

  • Anonymous

I know it's probably too late…but THANK YOU for giving Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia) a shout-out…my favorite song of all time; and NOBODY knows what I am talking about when I mention it.

  • Anonymous

You kidding? It's never gets late early around here.
Glad to give Us3 props. Never understood why it got zero airplay on the supposed jazz station in town back in '93.

  • Anonymous

This has got to be the worst top song list ever. You're opinion of course but seriously…Amy Grant and Vanilla Ice in the top 10. Just horrible.

  • Anonymous

I think it should have made it to the Top 50.
    Long live The Brothers Johnson!!!!

  • Anonymous

Speaking of which, have you ever that outtake where Casey Kasem simply loses it about the song request for the dead dog? Ponderous!!!

  • Anonymous

    Ahhh…music to my ears.

  • Anonymous

I am a fan of your blog but your taste in music sucks. Sorry. Del Amitri?

  • Anonymous

Works better for me than the opposite.

  • Anonymous

wow – – thanks for the mention !!!

  • Anonymous

i should have said, “thanks for the mention at #102 – – nice to be remembered – – – message from Rob Hegel

OK, that's the secret. I can post if I don't try to put in any login information.
Anyway, a footnote on Dean Friedman. When his album came out, I was tangentially involved in the music world, so I became part of a promo contest — find a new name for Dean Friedman (needless to say, they were not really looking for a new name). My entry was “Dean Moriarty,” a reference they had to explain to the then-youthful Mr. Friedman. My favorite of the entries was “Jan and Dean Friedman.”

The fact that Prince is only represented twice, while VANILLA ICE actually made the top ten is astounding and somewhat repulsive. 'Under Pressure' is sooooo much better.

im sorry but are you from the planet earth? The words “Led Zeppelin” do not appear once on this page. Nor bohemian rhapsody. And how in gods name is there only one bob dylan song on here. he has been voted on countless occasions, the greatest songwriter in history. not to mention that i have never heard of half of your top 10. I mean american pie is good and all, but it shouldn't make the top 5 on any list. you only had one rolling stones song and i had never heard of it. thats saying something considering i own most of their albums. also i would like to add that the top selling band of all time, the beatles, have on song on here. it wasnt even a song that makes the top 100 on most people's lists. Please i beg you broaden your musical horizons, you are focusing too much on shitty songs.

Note to self: Check with others before deciding what I like.
