After some games, all you can do is shrug.
Even when they come when every game left feels precious.
Even when they come against the Yankees, with all the associated pomp and bother.
Christian Scott was awfully good, giving up solo shots to Ben Rice and Austin Wells. Wells’s drive was even long enough to have been a home run in a park scaled for adults.
Alas, Cam Schlittler and the Yankee relievers who followed him were just a little better — the Mets didn’t have a hit until Brett Baty‘s double in the fifth and wound up with just three on the day, matching the Yankees’ three.
I’d complain more about the short porch, hastily changing the subject if someone noted that both teams got to bat there, but to what avail? Normalize the dimensions so Rice flies out and the Mets lose 1-0.
Like I said, sometimes all you can do is shrug.
For the non-shrug potion of today’s recap, give a listen to National League Town, in which I join our pal Jeff Hysen to discuss finding enjoyment in a lousy season. We have great fun considering the future of Andy Green, Mets’ backup catchers, what we can expect from next season, and more.

I was hoping Scott would come back for the 7th, since he’d only thrown 82 pitches. Too much to ask for at this stage, I guess.
It’s been a season of craps, but you realize that in this second half, almost every day they’ve been running out a promising young pitcher (anyone named Manaea excluded, although he gets his chances). McLean, Scott, Thornton, Tong… I hope that’s a good sign for the future.
I can handle getting shut out by someone who may be the best pitcher in baseball a lot easier than when it comes from someone with an ERA over 6. Agree on another inning for Scott but coming off TJS I guess they’re being careful. Had the same feeling about Thornton and the 8th inning the night before despite what Keith was saying.
