Don’t Designate Me, Bro

When the word “designated” enters the clubhouse conversation, ballplayers must get a little glum. If you’re told you’re a designated hitter, it means your glove is deemed superfluous. If you’re told you’re designated for assignment, it means the entirety of you is deemed superfluous. Until somebody declares different, the NL reverts to a DH-free zone […]

A Seth of Fresh Despair

Recently, as in a day or two before a revised Spring Training schedule embedded with a pod of Marlins, Nationals, Cardinals and Astros was issued and my mood instinctively if temporarily brightened, I was feeling pretty nihilistic about the whole Mets baseball thing. “Can you imagine them trading…?” I asked myself about pretty much every […]

Immoral Victories

You know the thing about moral victories in baseball, right? Namely, that they don’t exist. You were down 8-1 and gallantly came back and showed fight and lost 8-7? Here’s a pat on the head, because that’s called a loss.

Well, Wednesday night’s game against the Marlins, because of course it had to be the Marlins, […]

Welcome, THB Class of 2019!

Another year in the books! Another decade in the books! And another class of matriculating Mets to welcome to The Holy Books!

Background: I have a trio of binders, long ago dubbed The Holy Books (THB) by Greg, that contain a baseball card for every Met on the all-time roster. They’re in order of arrival in […]

The following is a paid commercial advertisement for Marisnick, Wacha, Brach & Porcello.

Hello. Are you facing the winter blahs? Do you need something to brighten your cold and gray outlook? Are you worried that everybody around you is getting great stuff while you’re sitting around with the same old same old?

Then call us. We’re Marisnick, […]

This Is the Hardcover Edition

It’s the faces I’ll remember.

Steven Matz, hunkered down on the mound with his knees bent as Jorge Alfaro jogged around the bases, having authored a grand slam and a 6-0 Marlins lead. Matz’s face was a mask of horror and self-loathing, and for a moment I wondered if he’d be able to get back up.

Pete […]

Scooter and the Solar Bear

The Mets kept their heartbeat faint but detectable by beating the Reds on Sunday afternoon — a game I started listening to on the Tripper Bus back from D.C. and that ended with me standing in my living room in Brooklyn. (First comment: “I know they’re throwbacks, but the Reds really need to retire those […]

Sometimes You Don't Know What to Think

How would you describe Friday night’s Mets game? Thrilling? Reaffirming? Anxious? Horrifying?

Maybe all of the above?

I spent most of the evening not knowing what to think, with good and bad arriving one after the other.

For openers, I wondered when I started trusting Steven Matz. Matz hasn’t had a bad outing in more than a month, […]

Another 41 on Seaver Way

It’s too late for massive regret where Saturday night’s sloppiness is concerned. It’s Sunday morning, and another game is directly in front of us. It’s too early for despair where 2019 is concerned. Thirty-three games remain, and despite an ugly 9-5 loss facilitated by the Braves playing admirable heads-up baseball and the Mets playing abysmal […]

Mr. Clean Slate Here

“Hey, Greg, what’s this?”
“It’s a clean slate.”

“Aren’t you going to fill it in with details of Friday night’s brutal 4-1 Mets loss to the Royals?”
“Nope.”

“Why not?”
“Need a clean slate for tonight.”

“We understand the concept, Greg, but what about the way the Mets in the midst of a scalding pennant race couldn’t beat a team that […]
