The Spirit of 17–6

Saturday’s Mets game was one for the ages. I know I aged significantly during the three hours and thirty-six minutes it took for the Mets to lose the hell out of it.

When the game and I were comparatively wide-eyed […]

Here’s How It Went Down

Did ya see that thing? That thing with the Brew Crew? It didn’t end pretty. Not that it was all bad, though.

Joey Bats came through from outta nowhere, which is to say Canada by way of Georgia. We were […]

Tell You Why I Don’t Mind Mondays

I noticed an SNY banner displayed by the bourbon-branded club on the Promenade level, which I found odd (the banner, not the bourbon) until I remembered Gary Cohen mentioned something Sunday about broadcasting Monday night’s game alfresco. Our announcers were out of doors, and so were Stephanie […]

The Manchurian Marlin?

The Mets once had a player who was referred to, without irony, as Mr. Marlin. His name was Jeff Conine. We knew him as a nice if ineffectual guy at the end of his career. He couldn’t help stem the tide that washed the 2007 Mets out to sea, but even Mr. Marlin can do […]

Rafael’s Rare-ish Gem

Asdrubal Cabrera was on first base, Yoenis Cespedes was on second, Dominic Smith was batting. Smith singled up the middle. Cespedes came around to score. Except Smith’s ball […]

Firsts and Stills

No matter how many ballgames you go to, it is often mentioned, you’ll see something you haven’t seen before. Sure enough, I experienced a plethora of firsts on Tuesday night, which was by no means my first ballgame.

Let’s see what I saw that I hadn’t seen previously…

• The pat-you-down security guy hassling me about my […]

Safeco Nights

A few impressions from a late night in Seattle absorbed via the television in New York before I drifted off to a dreamland in which the Mets don’t linger in distant American League cities where the designated hitter is de rigueur.

• The DH bites. We’ve been through this before. We’ll be through it again. I’m […]
