Taken Down in Paradise City

We have reached a stop on the MY FAVORITE SEASONS, FROM LEAST FAVORITE TO MOST FAVORITE, 1969-PRESENT journey that can’t be appreciated fully if you forget to pack nuance. This season wouldn’t rate as highly as it does with me if there wasn’t more to it than its unfortunate ending. It would likely rate a […]

I've Seen the Future and It Doesn't Work

Welcome to A Met for All Seasons, a series in which we consider a given Met who played in a given season and…well, we’ll see.

As August 1988 came to an end, the New York Mets were one full season removed from a championship and looked like a good bet to add more flags over Shea Stadium. The team’s […]

Getting a Grip

Timing really is everything.

My kid and I got on a plane to Iceland a few minutes after the end of the Mets’ victory over the Cubs and returned a few hours before the first of their check-for-pulse efforts against the Dodgers. While overseas and four hours down the clock, I checked in on our stalwarts […]

Blowin’ in the Draft

With your first selection of what to do on Thursday night, June 15, at 7 o’clock, I hope you’ll choose to make a visit to Bergino Baseball Clubhouse, 67 E. 11th St. in Manhattan. I’ll be there talking about my book Piazza: Catcher, Slugger, Icon, Star with gracious owner and podcast host Jay Goldberg, going […]

An Awful Lotta Ruben Tejada

Shocking as it may have been to behold, Bartolo Colon doubling in Anthony Recker was less surprising than Ruben Tejada emerging as the Mets’ full-time third baseman. Anthony Recker being on second for Colon to double in was rather stunning in and of itself — Recker was 0-for-13 at Citi Field before the bottom of the […]

For Best Performance in a Met Loss...

“It feels good for me, but it would have felt even better if we had won that ballgame.”

“We lost, so I can’t get too excited. If we would’ve won, it would’ve been more exciting.”

“I just wanted to play hard, but it didn’t matter because we lost.”

“It was great while it was happening. but when they […]

Our Shared Language (Besides 'Rats!')

We can all agree Niese didn’t have it and the Mets did little against Happ and missing the Astros is something that sounds good in theory, but at this moment they can’t move to the American League soon enough for our tastes. The Mets, a pretty good club in April, started May by losing again […]

Kid's Last Shea Swing

Video gold from our Mets archivist pal LarryDC:

Right away you get Keith Hernandez’s final Mets plate appearance. At 2:24, Gary Carter catches for the final time at Shea. And seconds later, Kid is swinging in Flushing for the last time. Watch the at-bat and listen to how Steve Zabriskie describes him. Pretty much sums him […]

The Happiest Recap: 130-132

Welcome to The Happiest Recap, a solid gold slate of New York Mets games culled from every schedule the Mets have ever played en route to this, their fiftieth year in baseball. We’ve created a dream season that includes the “best” 130th game in any Mets season, the “best” 131st game in any Mets season, […]

Davis, Save Us

The Mets were meandering through their most arid major award season since 1993 — the last time no Met scored a single vote for MVP, Cy Young, Manager of the Year or Rookie of the Year nor nabbed a Silver Slugger or Gold Glove — when it appeared we’d have nothing more to sate our […]
