Welcome, THB Class of 2022!

Spring is here … oh wait it totally isn’t, it’s cold and barren and horrible out there. But spring will be here soon enough, believe it or not. Which means we’d better welcome 2022’s matriculating Mets, now proud members of The Holy Books!

(Background: I have three binders, long ago dubbed The Holy Books by Greg, […]

Column A or Column B?

To review, these days the Mets play two kinds of games, which for simplicity’s sake we’ll tally up in separate columns.

In Column A, we record games like these, to quote some dumbass blogger: “ones in which they lose seemingly winnable affairs in horribly frustrating ways”.

Column B is the home for games like these: “ones in […]

Not As Dead As We Were

You score 15 runs, what do you get? Enough peace of mind to carry you through an off day, I hope.

The New York Mets, who entered Wednesday tied for first place in the National League East, exited Wednesday a half-game ahead of their closest competition. Not bad for a team declared deceased by a vocal […]

The Mets-Phillies Takeout Special

OK, lemme see if I got all this. You want the pair of Slugger Milestones — the 100th RBI and the 30th homer, wrap them separately. Yeah, those’ll stay cold. They’re Polar.

You want the Speedy Duo with the Double Steal, the back half being the steal of home. You got it. We keep that on […]

That’s The Ticket

The Night of Chicken, Roses and Sugar

For me, the Mets are rarely if ever on the periphery. Most nights they’re front and center. But now and then even they have to share space with other pursuits.

We’re finishing up three weeks in my folks’ summer cottage in Maine, an annual visit extended this year as an experiment in remote work and escaping […]

Fits, Starts and Immaculate Enough Endings

Through seven innings Friday night, the Mets-Marlins contest could have gone either way. It’s not unusual that the identities of a given game’s winner and loser are yet to be determined with two regulation innings to go, but this brand of uncertainty gnawed a bit deeper. Lose this game to the Marlins, and it’s a […]

A Game That Needed a Noah

A long time ago, it looked like Noah Syndergaard was on his way to a perfect game.

That wasn’t 40 days and 40 nights ago — that’s the story of another Noah — but by the end of this deluged and drowned evening, with its two rain delays, it sure felt like it had been that […]
