Grab All the Extra Bases You Can

Angel Hernandez, a master of ruining endings of baseball games, was ready to roll early Sunday afternoon, out to ruin a baseball game that had barely begun. It took him all of five pitches to pull a Sparky Lyle by dropping trou and planting his bare bottom on the Mets-Marlins finale birthday cake. Brandon Nimmo, […]

Time Continues After Opening Day

The second chapter of the perfect season completed itself Saturday, confirming that every good vibe we felt on Thursday was accurate. The Mets are 2-0 after beating St. Louis at Citi Field, 6-2. Clearly, they’ve gotten the hang of baseball and need only repeat everything they’ve done […]

Conforto On Deck

Willie Mays. Howard Johnson. Michael Conforto. The connective tissue? Besides having been New York Mets All-Stars? Each can be identified as an on-deck batter.

You don’t see On-Deck Batter listed as a position anywhere. Neither the 1973 nor 1976 Topps set included a graphic to indicate what an On-Deck Batter looked like. Nevertheless, every position player […]

The Value of Saying Little

Carlos Beltran shouldn’t feel so bad about Mets ownership’s attitude toward him a few years ago as he counts his Yankee dollars in the present. The unfortunate Trailways Toss of his reputation — a.k.a. throwing Beltran under the bus over knees not healed and hospitals not visited — seems to have hastened a change in […]

Their Work Here Was Done

Soon enough, we will concern ourselves with Spring Training hellos, including those from the Mets’ most recent flurry of somewhat tentative acquisitions. There’ll be first-pitch greetings from Shawn Marcum, Scott Atchison and LaTroy Hawkins; first-catch greetings from Landon Powell; greetings for the first time in a little while from previously dispatched Omar Quintanilla; greetings for […]

We’ve created a dream season consisting of the “best” 73rd game in any Mets season, the “best” 74th game in any Mets season, […]

The Happiest Recap: 007-009

Welcome to The Happiest Recap, a solid gold slate of New York Mets games culled from every schedule the Mets have ever played en route to this, their fiftieth year in baseball. We’ve created a dream season consisting of the “best” seventh game in any Mets season, the “best” eighth game in any Mets season, […]

Raised Expectations & Lost Colonies

Aw, how can you get mad at these Mets for being, per coach Dennis Green, who we thought they were? We thought they were going to be not very good and now we are beginning to be proven fairly prescient.

It was a heckuva first half. There may be some heck left in the second half. […]

Rays 5 Phils 5

How evenly matched are the Rays and Phils? Let’s take a closer Faith and Fear in Flushing look.

Ray Daviault

1) Made Met and major league debut April 13, 1962 at the Polo Grounds, first home game in the history of the franchise. Gave up a walk, a wild pitch, a fielder’s choice and another wild pitch […]

That's What Friends Are For

Welcome to Flashback Friday, a weekly feature devoted to the 20th anniversary of the 1986 World Champion New York Mets.

Twenty years, 43 Fridays. This is one of them.

On a summer Sunday morning in 1986, I called Fred Bunz to tell him I’d be on my way over to pick him up for our trip […]
